Living and Learning in English

by Aileen Taver Kitchin & Virginia French - 1947

This article describes the English program at Teachers College. It is based in part upon faculty suggestions and in part upon the students' own interpretation of their needs, but, beyond these, upon the experience of linguists in teaching adult professional people from foreign countries to understand the stream of speech as it rushes toward them across the lectern or the information desk, and to produce an adequate stream intelligibly and automatically—in short, to conduct an English dialogue with their American environment.
