The past two decades of research on teaching have witnessed a gradual broadening of empirical focus from the narrow study of the personality traits of “good” teachers, to the identification of teacher behavior that seemingly results in higher student achievement, to a closer, more careful examination of teaching as it naturally occurs in thousands of classrooms across the country. Where once we tried to create tidy definitions of teaching and teachers, definitions we hoped could be transmitted and reproduced infinitely, we now realize that teaching is so complex as to defy rigid definition.
