Although the authors have made a sincere attempt to carry through their purposes, namely, "to deal with certain sociological concepts essential to an understanding of modern social life; and to help nurses better understand their professional relationships and contribute to an understanding of social relations in their daily living," this reviewer felt slightly uncomfortable while reading the book. For one thing, the text is set in very small type; for another, it is difficult to follow the great number of generalizations which the authors use in condensing a wide variety of material into 256 pages. This material ranges from a discussion in Chapter 1 of "Society and Social Groups" to a discussion in Chapter 17 of "The Nurse and the Social Worker." The content is based on concepts and practices developed by the fields of sociology, psychology, anthropology, the health professions, and social work. The philosophy of the authors throughout...
