The purpose and character of this volume are indicated in a passage in the preface: "The wisdom and knowledge of school administrators and supervisors are key factors in releasing the potential of teachers. If the former are capable of recognizing and selecting promising talent, if they know what constitutes suitable working conditions and can provide them, and if they can establish the climate essential for a strong morale, they will have demonstrated superlative leadership." The authors lay stress continuously on the importance of respecting the feelings and sensibilities of teachers. For instance, in regard to the assignment of teachers to committee work and other special duties they indicate that when teachers assume time-consuming tasks they should have their regular load reduced. In meetings of the staff to consider curriculum and other matters they recommend that the administrator or supervisor should have no preferred status. They give a warning which many administrators...
