Despite unending public forums, education probably leads the professions in the number and kind of professional problems that are discussed chiefly in back rooms. Lieberman has written a comprehensive study of education as a profession, and embedded in it lies his substantial contribution: a superb analysis of crucial issues in public school teaching which seldom see the daylight of informed public discussion. Beginning with chapters on the nature and significance of the professions, and the problem of professional function in education, he considers the problems of authority, autonomy, certification, and accreditation, and goes on to examine the characteristics of teachers, their economic and occupational status, their ethics, their associations, and their unions. His major thesis is that the further professionalization of education would be beneficial both to society and to educators.
