Primary Understanding and Teaching as Storytelling together make an elegant call for rethinking early education and a beginning place for rethinking education generally (Primary- Understanding is the first of a four-book series, with each focusing on a different age group and curriculum approach). To better understand Egan’s challenges to education, a brief look at each work will provide a starting point for an exploration of the implications of this line of thought. Teaching as Storytelling is directed toward the classroom teacher who is interested in understanding the classroom as well as making some changes in the classroom. It presents “an alternative approach to planning teaching.“1 The first part of the book makes a brief but well-stated case for storytelling as curriculum organizer and including some well-developed examples of the uses of storytelling in curriculum planning.
