For almost as long as they have known each other, the West has applied the epithets "mysterious" and "unchanging" to the East. No doubt coined by casual observers from the West and exploited for their romantic appeal by the travel agency and the shipping line, these epithets were essentially inaccurate, and their widespread currency merely reflected the West's abysmal ignorance of the East. Needless to say, no society is inherently mysterious and beyond comprehension, and what is more obvious, no society ever stands still. Furthermore, no single adjective can adequately describe so vast and varied a region as Asia. If Asia still has primitive tribes whose way of life seems unchanging, it also has modern industrial states such as Japan, which has changed more rapidly in the last one hundred years than many a modern nation, east or west.
