Mr. Barnes's excellent little book is based on one main assumption: that ". . . the educational practitioner in the classroom and office has a vital research role and an obligation to fill it. His role is different from that of the full-time researcher, but it it nonetheless significant." The significance of this role has been examined several times during recent years, notably by Stephen M. Corey in Action Research to Improve School Practices and by the writers of the 1957 Yearbook of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development. If the historic tendency of the school to change only in reaction to external crises is ever to be changed, it will be because teachers are given the means to make their own evaluation of teaching, subject-matter, and learning modes.
