Acknowledging that their definitions are in "arbitrary terms," Petersen and Petersen define the total extension function of the university as "the whole of the variegated increment to the university's two basic tasks of education in day sessions and scholarly research (except for Cooperative Extension)." Within this framework of the total extension function of the university, the authors define university adult education as "that portion of the total extension function that is both education and at the college level." Against this definition of university adult education, the Petersens first vigorously analyze what is going on in the universities under the rubric of "continuing education" or "university extension." Sweeping aside all activities that they find to be "non-educational" or not at the college level, they establish what seems to them to be a hard core of adult education that is worthy of consideration in the traditional purposes of the university.
