In the young field of programed instruction, this collection of papers and abstracts has classic proportions. Although programing is a relatively new technology in education, it is an exceedingly lively one. Eugene H. Galanter's Automatic Teaching: The State of the Art (N. Y.: John Wiley & Sons, 1959), a collection of papers from a single conference (reviewed in the Record, February, 1961), was the first full treatment of this topic. Lumsdaine and Glaser's source book, the second major tide in this field, is monumental in scope. Here the authors have drawn together in one volume the most important papers and presentations in the field of teaching machines from the 1920s into 1960. After introductory statements by Lumsdaine and Glaser, the main body of this resource book presents reprints of forty-five articles. They are grouped under four headings: (a) Pressey's Self-Instructional Test-Scoring Devices, which includes Pressey's pioneering 1926 and 1927 papers; (b)... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
