Mr. Patton, President of Republic Steel, gives an outstanding statement of the role of business for the next decade, if business is to survive and prosper in a free enterprise system. He presents his views under three topics: (1) Problems for Management at Home, (2) The Problems Abroad, and (3) Business Strategy for a Prosperous Decade. In looking at Problems for Management at Home, Mr. Patton starts with the assertion that the economic and political ingredients essential to long term business growth in the American tradition include freedom of choice, private property, profit incentives, competition, and democratic government. Doubt is expressed as to our understanding of this value system and as to our real adherence to it. Wherever our society is going, other than drifting, we must have a good grasp of the political and economic values involved.
