The main point of this book appears to be that the rise of modern giant corporations has made our society complex, with these corporations playing a crucial role which affects the financial and social well-being of all individuals. The interrelationship between modern corporations and the welfare of the individual necessarily brings big business into conflict with government. Giant business tries to prevent government from interfering with its business activities; government tries to prevent big business from interfering with the individual life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness which mark our democratic way of life. According to Mr. Levy, the new role of the lawyer in modern society is to strike a balance between these two fundamental interests. On the one hand, the lawyer for government uses his ingenuity and professional resources to insure protection of the individual without unnecessarily curtailing the business activities of giant corporations.
