Poverty is no stranger to the western world, but we have come so close to a solution to the economic problem of production, including the production of an abundant food supply, that it is a curious experience for an American to be confronted with documentation for this statement: "Two out of every three people alive today eke out a marginal existence struggling against the four malignant curses of our times: hunger, poverty, ignorance, and chronic ill health." It is still more jarring to be reminded that one is a member of a privileged minority simply by virtue of the fact that he can read the proof that two billion people sleep nightly with hunger gnawing at their bellies or disease ravaging their tissues.
