Telstar and Vostok III and IV reminded us this past summer of how intimately involved we are with the rest of the world and how important an event in one part of the planet is likely to be for those who live on another part. The impressive thing about the shrinking of the earth under the astringent of technology, however, is not its occurrence but its rate.
