The marketplace may be bare, but there is hope. The day of the "teacher-scholar" for our secondary schools is at hand and long overdue. Editor Stabler and his contributors share this belief, deeply felt. It is this commitment to quality teacher training which makes this a thoughtful, persuasive symposium. Stabler raises the question and the essential theme of the book—"how to teach John's teacher?" He and his collaborators answer variously, but the central notions are these: A "scholarly penetration" of the subject to be taught. A thorough background in educational psychology and philosophy of education, "taught appropriately for graduate students." "Teaching practice under competent supervision." A synthesis and integration by the student of the various components of his program. "He should, in short, know his subject, know to what end he is teaching it, and know how to teach it effectively to adolescents." At first blush there appears to be little new here. Have...
