Earl McGrath's concern with the problems of liberal versus professional education is convincing and compelling. He writes with understanding and sympathy of a problem which confronts, particularly, undergraduate schools which combine professional with general education. His philosophy of the ideal of professional education in music, summed up in the first chapter, as a proper balance between technical training, the cultivation of motivations beyond the field of specialization, and the encouragement of attitudes which characterize the liberally educated mind, will vibrate sympathetically with the ideals of all thoughtful deans of music schools. I am grateful for his insistence that in the hands of able teachers a "professional" course may convey important "liberal" implications, whereas, conversely, in other hands a "liberal" course may become thoroughly "illiberal." From this point on, the reader is delivered into the hands of Dr. Wager, and the book becomes, to this reviewer, progressively less convincing. Although these later chapters...
