The authors vigorously advance what they claim is a new approach to the education of emotionally disturbed children. They designate their approach as a "structured classroom atmosphere." In it, the major emphasis is placed on the child's gradually increasing academic achievement which, they assert, is conducive to sound mental health. They state their major thesis as follows: "A human being gains in mental health and stability and self-respect by doing jobs he has to do; conversely, not to meet his daily obligations results in loss of respect for self and job and in a generally deteriorated emotional condition" (p. 10). In support of their point of view, Haring and Phillips present the results of an experiment they performed on the differential effects of "structured classroom atmosphere" in one group of children (Group I) compared with a "permissive" approach in another group (Group III).
