In 1959 a Conference on Verbal Learning and Verbal Behavior was held under the joint auspices of New York University and the Office of Naval Research. This volume of seven papers and discussion is the result. The majority of the material is in the fine old psychological research tradition of verbal learning, reaching back 75 years to Ebbinghaus, inventor of the nonsense syllable. Verbal learning refers to the associative processes studied via rote learning of verbal materials, meaningful words and nonsense syllables, in a laboratory setting. Verbal behavior, in contrast, refers to the verbal characteristics of a natural language. The conference papers represent both areas of investigation and present an excellent overview of a very limited area of research. While the book should receive a warm reception from basic investigators in verbal learning and related areas, it is primarily a book for the research specialist and offers little of interest...
