We find here a cheerful book on the teaching of English by one who obviously gladly teaches. The author also gladly writes, for this book sparkles with unexpected bits of wit and verbal play. As the author himself suggests, a bit of madness in his method is by no means a detraction. Nevertheless, the light touch is not flippancy; Professor Bernstein is a practical realist, hardened by years of classroom experience to expect anything and prepared to meet what comes. He conveys this urgency of preparedness to his readers, especially to those preparing to teach. "The answer," he states, "lies in the four-letter word 'work.'" Although he is conversant with the latest theories and gadgets of English teaching and displays an enviable command of scholarship in his field, he is essentially conservative in approach, cleaving to that which is good without condemning that which is new.
