Dean of Students at Hunter College and a past-president of the American College Personnel Association, Dr. Hopwood finds in six recent books on guidance (1) a dissatisfaction with technical tricks of the counseling trade, (2) a considerable gap between theory and its practical application, and (3) a remarkable diversity in the ideas that are advanced as genuinely relevant to the enterprise. On the other hand, she approvingly notes a growth toward greater thoughtfulness and an effort to found guidance practices on the understandings of the behavioral sciences and to evaluate them in the light of serious philosophical criteria. The verdict: More intellectual work is necessary before guidance can be properly called a full profession.
