I have become deeply engaged with this collection of Barbara Biber’s early papers. The book has evoked memories of my own development as a teacher and a professional, in which I had the enormous good fortune of taking Biber’s course describing children’s development through drawing and painting and what one could understand about children’s own meanings and intentions from the study of these. I also heard her, during the summer of 1945, at the Vassar Summer Institute where she lectured on play as it functions in the hypothesizing process of the child. The reprinting of Biber’s early essays is a gift. In their enormously reflective and considered argument, they call teachers to the act of reflection as an obligation of commitment to the profession.
