THIS MONTH is one in which we are destined to hear a great deal about conservatism, and it seems likely that we are going to be hard pressed to maintain the distinction between the ancient traditions of civility, the conditions under which we can best maintain the dignity and freedom of choice of individual human beings, and the purely contemporary ways by which the status quo can be defended by those who profit from it or find it comfortable. For this reason, October is a good season in which to give careful attention to Lewis A. Dexter’s The Tyranny of Schooling (New York: Basic Books, 1964. Pp. 182. $4.50). Subtitled “An Inquiry into the Problem of “Stupidity,’“ this low-keyed and insightful little volume is a criticism of American education from a conservative point of view.
