In 1957, Sears, in collaboration with Eleanor Maccoby and Harry Levin, published Patterns of Child Rearing which reported the results of an extensive structured-interview study of the child-rearing behaviors of 379 mothers. The book proved to be a valuable compendium of data, hypothesis, and theory. Identification and Child Rearing fails to live up to the stature of its predecessor. The book describes the procedures and findings of an eight-week investigation of the child-rearing antecedents and behavioral correlates of parental identification in four-year-old children. The basic fault is not to be found with the book but with the research which it reports. Sears and his colleagues chose to collect data upon hundreds of variables using techniques such as parent interviews, naturalistic observation, structured situations, and doll play. Correlational analysis was then employed to ascertain what related to what. Regrettably, the size of the child samples studied were so small (21 boys and... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
