Professor Kneller wrote Logic and The Language of Education "primarily for teachers." Educators, he claims, "have lacked expert guidance in handling the logical problems of education" and "much educational writing is vitiated by vague and misleading notions of what can properly be called logical and what can not." Kneller's conviction is that "teachers who are trained in logic will be more likely to inculcate habits of clear and orderly thinking in their students." Kneller divides his book into nine chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 are entitled "The Nature of Logic" and "Modes of Logic." In the former he offers definitions of "logic," "sentences," "propositions" and "argument," and a list of fallacies of reasoning into which the logically uninformed teacher can easily fall. In the latter he distinguishes deduction and induction as the two main types of reasoning. Under deduction, he treats the logic of terms, the logic of propositions, the prepositional...
