For more than a decade now, Catholic education has been undergoing an identity crisis of megaton proportions. Unabashedly founded to "save the faith" of their young Catholic clients, the schools were characterized by something of a "rescue operation" approach, often manifesting itself in a rather embattled, triumphalist style. But as American Catholics have shaken off the traces of their immigrant origins, an increasing number of criticisms have been levelled at various aspects of the loosely-structured "system." If anything, the volume of current criticism runs the risks of overkill. Controversy surrounding Catholic education is most often focussed on two issues: (1) the purported poverty of Catholic intellectualism and scholarship, and; (2) the possibility that the Church's schools are failing even in their avowed purpose of religious education.
