This collection of five essays, written by Harvard graduate students for the editor's American History seminar, will be of special interest to readers concerned with the development of American colleges and universities and with intellectual history. This book deals with a significant period in the development of the social sciences. Social reform was in the air, and Darwinism was stimulating new thoughts and new approaches. These were years when the social sciences were developing as scholarly disciplines, and colleges were becoming modern universities. The central theme is stated in the subtitle: "From Inculcation to the Open Mind." In place of the synthesis provided by moral philosophy there came an acceptance of inductive reasoning and the use of empirical methods, pursued at first in the belief that the new methods would lead eventually to certainty and to a single principle of order in reality and later with recognition of a plurality of...
