What can a study of Boston politics and education provide that has not come out in the recent articles on urban schools in The New Republic, Newsweek, and a host of other periodicals? The reports of the U.S. Office of Education ("Coleman Report") and the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights (Racial Isolation in the Public Schools) have provided exhaustive descriptions now widely used by journalists: and these descriptions characterize urban school conditions across the nation substantially like those found by Schrag in Boston. Schrag is clearly correct in assuming that Boston may serve as a "barometer" for the nation-just as, in some general ways, any big city might serve. But there is a special value in Schrag's book because he seeks and establishes connections between the schools, their socio-economic clientele, and politics.
