Most people will agree that the idea of the land grant college was perhaps the greatest contribution to higher educational theory made by the United States. "The marriage of conceptualization and application," as Chancellor Franklin D. Murphy, of the University of California at Los Angeles has put it, made possible the enormous productivity of American agriculture and even today is showing underdeveloped nations how to secure adequate supplies of food. It was an historical accident that established the land grant colleges and most of the state universities in relatively isolated rural areas of our nation. Today in a highly and increasingly urbanized nation the land grant colleges have evolved into vast "multiversities" with entirely new constituencies far different from the sons and daughters of "agriculturalists and mechanics" whom they served in their early years.
