Professor Edwin Fenton of Carnegie Institute of Technology reports in The New Social Studies on his observation of social studies curriculum projects throughout the United States. Supported by a grant from the Fund for the Advancement of Education, the book is a Conant-type report, attempting to describe and assess social studies education and prescribe for the future. Fenton courageously undertakes a massive task in this small volume. By his own description, the social studies curriculum reform projects vary widely in their objectives, the quality of their work, and their comprehensiveness. Several trends differentiate these projects from traditional social studies curricula: the utilization of concepts or generalizations as a guide to content, of inquiry skills arranged in sequential order for development, and of behavioral and procedural attitudes for citizenship education.
