First-grade teachers are usually taken aback when confronted with a child who can read on the very first day of school. After all, the major focus of first grade is the teaching of reading. And since so many biographies of famous men make note of the fact that one of the first demonstrations of the subject's genius was his precocity in reading, there has developed a stereotype of the early reader. In Children Who Read Early, Dolores Durkin effectively demolishes this stereotype. Some children who read early have IQ's as low as 82, though as a group they are considerably above average in intelligence (median IQ's of two groups of early readers reported on were 121 and 133). Also, early readers do not necessarily come from socalled "advantaged" families. In one of the studies, there was a preponderance of "blue-collar" family backgrounds.
