Practically everyone who has been reading educational literature during the past few months, and non-readers who have been interviewed by salesmen for beginning readers must know that Jeanne Chall in her Learning to Read: The Great Debate has produced a most important book. Working under a grant by the Carnegie Corporation of New York, she has examined twenty-four sets of readers with their accompanying handbooks, has read scores of research studies and has interviewed some twenty-five proponents of different reading approaches. Her work has taken her over these United States and to England. To review such a compact body of material, itself a closely textured review, is difficult. Almost every conclusion must be read in full since few clear-cut characteristics mark any one approach or any particular series of readers. Phonics, Dr. Chall finds, may be combined with interest; interest developed through individualization of instruction; linguistics confused with phonics; and "look-see"...
