This timely volume, by Alfred Baldwin, Professor of Psychology at New York University, coincides with the current rapid increase in the research and publications of investigators in child development. Baldwin's purpose, clearly stated in the preface, is ". . . to provide in one volume a discussion of some of the diverse major theoretical positions" (Pref. VII). In so doing he has helped to bridge the gap among researchers of different theoretical backgrounds. Early in the book the author provides an excellent account of the nature and methodological principles of scientific theory. He delineates the minimum requirements of a scientific theory: the predictions should be publicly "verifiable and testable, and have clear logical derivations and clear empirical definitions" (p. 79). Baldwin has presented this material lucidly, and he has facilitated the evaluation of the various theories of child development and behavior which are presented in the remaining sections.
