This book is a compilation of essays by contemporary British writers in the general area of educational theory or philosophy of education. Of the nine authors, four are associated with The Institute of Education of The University of London, four are teachers of philosophy at British universities, and one is a teacher in Magdalen College School, Oxford. In a valuable introduction Professor Archambault traces the developments in British thought in the area, and explains the purposes of the volume as three: to demonstrate the product of educational problems analyzed in "a disciplined philosophical manner"; to encourage further co-operation among philosophers and educationists; and to define the functions and nature of philosophy of education through the examples cited. The unity of the book is said to lie in a common concern with what the aims of education ought to be, and in a common disciplined manner of working. The essays read as...
