History of Graduate Instruction in the United States

The historical sitting of graduate 'instruction lends itself to both chronological and topical organization for purposes of discussion. The major sections of this chapter present an Overview of the chief chronological periods in the, development of graduate work in the United States, including the following central themes: the .social and cultural forces influencing the development of higher education before the founding of Johns Hopkins University in 1876, the pioneering stage in graduate institutions during the latter part of the nineteenth century, the efforts toward accrediting and standardization during the early part of the present century, the .changing .purposes and programs of graduate instruction between two world wars, and trends since World War. II.
