Most North American children now attend some sort of child-care program, either full day or part day, prior to enrollment in formal school. Two recent trends in child care have disturbed child-care advocates. One is an increased academic emphasis in these programs. The notion is that in order to be prepared for school, children must be academically ready. The second disturbing trend is the prevalence of programs that meet basic health and safety regulations but offer low-quality services to children and families. Two recent books address these trends, Good Day Bad Day: The Child’s Experiences of Child Care by Lyda Beardsley and Children’s Play and Learning: Perspectives and Policy Implications edited by Edgar Klugman and Sara Smilansky. Good Day Bad Day examines the issues of child-care quality from the perspective of children through a composite account of a day in two very different child-care centers.
