We surely know what it means to live in a society dominated by the idea of work. But what would it mean to live in a leisure society—a society, say, in which 10 percent of the population could produce all the needed goods, services, and food? And how might we think about schooling in a society in which it would be assured that 90 percent of our students would not get jobs? Questions such as these have already been asked and they have led some writers to put forth specific proposals as to how to cope with such a situation. It has been proposed, for example, that we institute a guaranteed annual wage for everyone. And there has been much in the way of suggestions as to how people should spend their free or leisure time.
