Bridging the Gap: Policy Research Rooted in Practice

In this chapter we describe an alternative research strategy, which we label "contour research." This research strategy has been demonstrated to be effective in bridging the policy maker-practitioner gap. It places heavy emphasis on building and maintaining interactive linkages with practitioners throughout the re: search effort. Recent studies of the change process are used to illustrate the strategy. Subsequently, implications of this research strategy and the findings from the studies are used to develop and explore issues and implications for the way that future policy could be developed and implemented. Such future policy would include close interactive ties between the policy developers and policy implementers, and thus would be more likely to bridge the gap.
