For many years feminist scholarship in different fields has assumed that we cannot understand the world without understanding the everyday experiences of girls and women. The unity and purpose represented in this view, however, are diminishing in the growing awareness that the everyday experiences of girls and women differ dramatically by how their identities are otherwise constituted. Class, race, and ethnicity also position girls and women so that the earlier clear connections that feminists made between women have muddied. Any feminism that was positioned only around norms of European-American middle-class women’s experiences would be too narrow to account for the complexity of gender. So as we near the end of the twentieth century we must speak of feminisms rather than feminism because of the many differences between perspectives on gender in feminist theoretical positions.
