Of Promises and Unresolved Puzzles: Reforming Teacher Education with Professional Development Schools

In the last ten years, hundreds of sites, partnerships, and programs have begun calling themselves “Professional Development Schools.” What do we know about these new arrangements and what do we need to know? To address these larger concerns, this chapter examines four questions about Professional Development Schools: (1) What is a Professional Development School? (2) What conditions affect the relationships among PDS partners? (3) What characterizes PDS-related research? (4) What are some persistent and emerging PDS puzzles?
