Throughout history there have been indi­viduals whom we wish could have lived on and on, because their contribution to our knowledge has been of surpassing im­portance. We would feel that the oil in the lamp could never run dry and, therefore, should still be available to us, not cur­tailed by the arbitrariness of death. Susan Isaacs was of that number. "But she, be­ing mortal, died." And she, being mortal, left us the legacy of her accomplishments in her writings and in her influence on education still today, although her name has gradually become dim. Yet the effect remains, not only in the country of her birth, but here too and in many far places whose teachers and others learned from her while she lived.   Dorothy Gardner, who studied under her and was her successor at the Institute of Education in the University of London, is the author of The First Biography.
