"This was to be Joan's book. We are now dedicating it together to the memory of Martin Luther King." So reads the inscription of Erik Erikson's latest book, Gandhi's Truth. Robert Coles dedicates his biography of Erikson to Cesar Chavez. When two psychoanalysts dedicate books to political leaders, it tells us something very important about the men, but it tells us more about the way psychoanalytic thought has changed in the past decades. This change is in large part due to the work of Erik Erikson, and now Robert Coles has carefully and painstakingly documented that work. As he explains in his preface, this biography is not about Erikson, the man, but about the growth of his work. There is minimum discussion of the people and life events which influenced Erikson; only enough to provide a bare outline. The heart of the book concerns itself with the development of the Eriksonian philosophy which has influenced the thinking of all behavioral scientists. The idea of looking at...
