The sins of the sixties are still with us and will be visited upon us for several generations. The developments in higher education during that period have cost us dearly and have made us develop a whole new attitude—philosophy of higher education—toward teaching and learning. Student-faculty movements during the sixties were often led by members of the humanities division, it was reported. Usually the largest of the humanities departments is the English department; it is, in fact, often the largest in a college or university. "The English teacher is a man divided. He has a double commitment [sic], and often his twin loyalties seem incompatible. On the one hand, he presents himself to his students as a partisan of literature, a defender of the humane values it expresses, and an enemy of all that inhibits the free exercise of the individual imagination. . . .
