The Problem of Rural Life

by Kenyon L. Butterfield - 1933

The people in the lands of missionary endeavor are overwhelmingly agricultural in their occupations and rural in their mode of life. In most of these countries some seven workers out of ten farm for a livelihood and eight or nine people out of ten live in rural villages. What education can do to meet rural situations in these lands depends obviously upon what those situations are. In offering a brief analysis of this rural problem the writer depends mainly upon material gathered and observations made in areas which he has recently visited—India, Burma, China, Japan, Korea, the Philippine Islands, South Africa. In later paragraphs reference will be made to certain differences in these countries that will affect educational policy; but it is surprising to discover the extent to which generally valid statements of the rural problem are true of all the countries visited.
