This book is a “tough read.” Built around a study of fifteen widely used high school history textbooks from the 1940s through the 1980s, it condemns many of the texts for distorting American history. By examining the selected texts, the authors claim to have a sound quantitative evaluation of the teaching of history in high schools. To determine which texts were most influential from 1940 through the 1970s, Lerner, Nagai, and Rothman surveyed the largest 120 school districts in the country. They then cross-referenced this list with one drawn from a survey of state departments of education. These efforts generated a list of texts representing 72 percent or roughly thirty-six of the fifty states. The authors borrowed a list from a textbook study at the University of California at Berkeley to represent the 1980s. The intersection of the three lists provided a final set of fifteen texts.
