This volume, fourth in a series sponsored by the Getty Center for Education and the Arts, is comprised of two main parts: "Beyond the Crossroads: Reflections on Painting" by artist Maurice Brown, and "Education's Four Competing Traditions of Art Making" by art educator and historian Diana Korzenik. As people in art education are well aware, the Getty Center's initiation and support of "discipline based art education" (DBAE) has had a strong impact in the field and, while making significant inroads, has also encountered opposition. The fundamental idea of discipline based art education is the coordination of work in the studio arts with studies in art history, art criticism, and aesthetics. Critics believe that curricular innovations based on this plan tend to diminish the attention and resources given to the studio arts per se, to denigrate (by implication or in actuality) the meaning of "hands on" studio work.
