After repeated but unsuccessful attempts to secure union recognition eighty workers staged a sit-down strike in Plants 3 and 5 of the Fanstee! Metallurgical Company during the third week of February 1937. During the days that followed they repulsed gas attack by the county police of Lake County, Illinois.
