Medieval Doctor Minds Groping toward the Light

by T. Swann Harding - 1939

IN JULY 1938, the Interdepartmental Committee to Coordinate Health and Welfare Activities presented to the National Health Conference a program formulated by its Technical Committee on Medical Care. This report represented the views of such experts as Martha M. Eliot of the Children's Bureau, Dr. I. S. Falk of the Social Security Board, and Surgeon General Thomas Parran, and other members of the staff of the Public Health Service. It held, in broad, generalized terms, that the medical knowledge we have is not put to efficient use because of social, economic, and professional barriers and that much disease and many deaths are preventable, and it presented a broad plan to remedy the situation.
