It is fitting that I should be writing this review seated at a library table in the guest house at Mount Saviour Benedictine Monastery near Elmira, New York. I think it appropriate mainly because this monastery typifies for me the noblest ideals of religious humanism: an overriding concern for man's relationship with man and with his predicament, and above all with his God. Although historically, in their certainty, some religions have been the main oppressors of the spirit of man, contemporary religions, in their uncertainty, are concerned with freeing the spirit of man. It is this concern with the spirit of man that I find a common and recurrent theme throughout the book Learning to Be, and for this reason it fits in well with many contemporary works on education, most obviously those of Paulo Freire.
