Nancie Atwell may be the greatest popularizer of writing process in schools throughout the nation. She is certainly a wildly successful author, with In the Middle (1998), and the founder of the Center for Teaching and Learning demonstration school, in Edgecomb, Maine. She has recently created a poetry anthology that comes out of her teachings in the Center. Naming the World differs from other anthologies in several aspects. It features a collection of 200 poems, but with lessons attached to each one for the middle-school English teacher. Atwell teaches herself here—that is, she continues with her methodology of showing herself in action with the students in her 7th- and 8th-grade classes. The results are surprising: pragmatic, but as formulaic as a phone directory. The work consists of three separate, but interconnected, parts: an Anthology; a Guide to the Anthology, wherein Atwell elaborates on her philosophy of teaching poetry; and a DVD...
