IT WOULD be immodest to praise the brilliance and the scholarly charm of a new book by Laski as all his works are proof of the highest standard of scholarship and literary elegance. This book, which the author himself calls a preface to his last book, "The Theory and Practice of the State," is a sociological history of the origin and development of the modern mind. Hence his work transcends the title of the book and is not limited to analysis of the history of Liberalism.
